Are Hmong refugees or Americans? After three decades of resettlement, the U.S. has become their home. Their contributions to society are ongoing: as entrepreneurs, educators, doctors and lawyers. This course explores the hopes and dreams of Hmong Americans as they work to build a life for themselves in this country. Class objectives: To understand how Hmong lives have been affected by war, the refugee experience and transnational migration; to explore transitions and changes in the Hmong American community, highlighting their ongoing contributions to American society; and to examine the complexity of American and Hmong American identities through the writings of first and second generation Hmong Americans
Presenter: Vincent Her, Professor, Dept. of Sociology/Archaeology, UW-La Crosse
